Escaping The Rut
January 17, 2024

Have you ever found yourself in a fitness rut, wondering how to break free from the cycle of excuses and negative self-talk? I've been there too, last week was rough. Let me share my recent experience and the five steps that helped me reclaim my motivation. 🏋️♀️💬

It all began with a strong start to the year—three days of invigorating workouts that left me feeling fantastic. Then, like a switch flipped, I found myself in a rut. Energy was elusive, and excuses became my constant companions: jury duty, a sick child, work demands. The negative self-talk crept in, making it tempting to believe that falling off the fitness wagon meant there was no point in trying again. 😓🚫

But here's the truth: that negative energy is powerful, and it takes conscious steps to overcome it. Here are the five steps that worked for me: 💡👟

Accountability is Key:

Enlist a friend to be your workout buddy. Knowing someone is counting on you increases your commitment. If showing up feels like a struggle, share your feelings with your friend – there's no shame in it. There is power in speaking it out loud and letting someone else help you through a hard time. Having a supportive friend can make that first workout back a game-changer. 🤝💪

Mix It Up:

Variety is the spice of life, and the same holds true for workouts. Break the monotony by incorporating different types of exercises throughout the week so you look forward to your workout, not dread it! Create a diverse plan, cycling, strength training, hill or interval runs, HIIT, Pilates or yoga. Write it in your planner or set reminders to keep it a no-brainer. Follow the plan you already set in motion and you will be successful.  🔄🏃‍♀️

Shake off the Plateau:

If you're hitting a plateau, it's a sign to switch things up. Change your workout routine and consider tweaking your diet. Cutting back on alcohol, sodas, and red meat can bring noticeable health benefits. Don't forget the power of hydration – aim for at least half your weight in ounces of water daily. 📉🥗💧

Gratitude in the Everyday:

Take a daily walk outdoors, disconnect from your phone, and immerse yourself in gratitude. Reflect on what you're thankful for, pray for your loved ones, and practice affirmations. Inhale positivity, exhale doubt – it's a simple yet powerful practice. 🌳🙏💖

Prioritize Sleep:

Ensure you're getting 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep. Adequate rest is essential for physical and mental well-being. Ditch the electronics before bedtime and cultivate a bedtime routine that leaves you refreshed and ready to conquer the day. 😴🌙💤

I'm happy to say that I've broken free from the rut. It took a few days, but I'm back to my workouts, running with friends, and lifting weights. Feeling sore again is a sweet reminder of the effort I've put in. Remember, it's okay to slip up, to ask for help, and to seek support when you need it. 💪✨
